Congestive heart failure in dogs
Heart failure is a condition, caused by an abnormality in the structure or the function of the heart, in which it is unable to pump normal quantities of blood to the tissues of the body. The heart is a pump, and when it fails, it often leads to fluid retention in the lung and the body cavities leading to congestive heart failure.
What causes congestive heart failure in dogs?
Birth defects of the heart
Degeneration of the heart valves
Heart muscle disease
Heartworm disease
Diseases of the pericardium
Irregular electrical rhythms of the heart
Congestive Heart failure in dogs causes reduced blood flow pumped to the muscles, leading to fatigue. In addition, most cases of heart failure are associated with the accumulation of fluid in the lungs, the chest cavity, or the abdominal cavity. This fluid accumulation usually leads to shortness of breath and other related health problems such as coughing and difficult breathing.

How to prevent Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs
-Keep teeth healthy
Dogs affected by untreated periodontal disease may develop kidney, liver and even heart disease The reason behind this is the fact that the bacteria found in decayed teeth may travel through the blood stream and settle in the heart valaves causing substantial damage. By keeping your dog's teeth healthy by providing dental treats, routine dental cleanings and daily tooth brushing, you may prevent potential health problems.
-Keep your dog slim
Overweight dogs are prone to several health problems, heart disease being a worrisome disease to watch out for. Ask your veterinarian about a a proper weight loss diet and cut on giving treats and table scraps.
Give quality food
Provide a high quality food. Check for two important elements: l-carnitine and co-enzyme Coq10l. Discuss with your vet about supplementing your dog with these elements should you feel your dog's diet is lacking them.
-Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Check if your dog's food contains Omega 3 Fatty acids. If not, consider switching to a healthier food or consider supplementing it. Your dog will also begin exhibiting a shinier and healthier coat after a while.
-Periodic Wellness exams
Have your dog seens at least yearly for puppies and adult dogs and at least twice a year for senior dogs. These exams may catch signs of disease before they progress.
-Heartworm preventative
Make sure your dog is given monthly heartworm medication without skipping any doses. Heartworm disease can be fatal and treatment is risky and costly.
