Safety of Hoodia Gordonii Diet Supplements

A great concern exists with Hoodia if it is abused or used by individuals with eating disorders that promote weight loss. Individuals with distorted body images who want to induce extreme degrees of weight loss often have a disorder called anorexia nervosa with or without bulimia. Anorexia nervosa is becoming more common and it is a life-threatening disorder. Some comments have already been made in the media about the dangers of Hoodia use in the extreme “dieter” with an eating disorder.

A proposed “warning” for use with Hoodia gordonii as a dietary supplement would be “Not to be used in childhood, pregnancy or lactating females who are breast feeding. Not to be used by individuals with eating disorders or those who are underweight or within a normal weight range. Allergic reactions may occur, as with all plant material. Reduced calorie intake can affect the control of diabetes mellitus. In cases of doubt, check with a medical practitioner prior to use.”

What you should know about Ephedra

The distinction between prescription versus non-prescription weight loss pills is becoming blurred. Because certain types of weight loss supplements (non-prescription pills) can be just as powerful/dangerous as weight loss drugs. Except that these weight loss supplements are NOT regulated in the same way as prescription weight loss pills, so if anything they can be more dangerous. Recently, the FDA issued warnings about weight loss supplements containing ephedra. So several manufacturers are now removing ephedra from their weight loss products and making them "ephedra-free."

Ephedra as Weight Loss Supplements

Ephedra, also known as ma huang, is a strong stimulant found in popular "herbal phen-fen" weight loss supplements. Despite it's widespread use in over-the-counter weight loss pills, there is no firm evidence that it promotes weight loss.

Ephedra Health Risks

However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 800 reports linking ephedra with dizziness, headaches, chest pain, psychosis, seizures and strokes. Some states even banned the stimulant. This is because when ephedra is taken regularly in weight loss supplements, your body stays in an unnaturally high gear and there is risk for heart palpitations and heart attacks.

Official Advice on Ephedra Weight Loss Pills The FDA urges everyone to consult with a doctor before trying any ephedra diet supplement and experts advise against using any weight-loss supplements that contain the herb.

Fentermine/Phentermine Weight Loss Pills

Fentermine weight loss pills are prescription-only appetite suppressants for the short-term management of obesity. Like all weight loss drugs, Fentermine pills are more effective when combined with a healthy program of diet and exercise, and if necessary, lifestyle modification. They are not an effective weight loss substitute for healthy eating and regular exercise.

Fentermine Weight Loss Pills Reduce Appetite Fentermine weight loss drugs are designed to affect neurotransmitters in the brain, thus reducing appetite cravings. Fentermine pills are highly addictive, therefore not recommended for individuals with a history of drug dependency or abuse.

Fentermine Weight Loss Pills - Do Diet Pills Help to Reduce Weight

Fentermine diet pills may be an effective weight loss option when combined with a healthy weight control program which reduces calorie-intake and increases exercise, although - as with most weight reduction drugs - there are side effects.

Fentermine Weight Loss Pills - Side Effects and Precautions

Side effects may include: blurred vision, breathing difficulties, chest pain, depression, diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, fainting, headaches, change in libido, nausea, swelling in lower legs. If these side effects persist, inform your doctor as soon as possible.

Overdose symptoms include: rapid breathing, confusion, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting.

If you experience other side effects when taking Fentermine weight loss pills, contact your doctor or health care provider. In case of overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Orlistat (Xenical)

Orlistat (Xenical), which was approved by the FDA in April 1999, is the first prescription drug in a new class of anti-obesity drugs that works by blocking the body's absorption of dietary fat.

Orlistat (Xenical) works in the gastrointestinal tract, blocking an enzyme that is needed to digest fat. Instead of being absorbed into the body, up to one third of the fat that a person consumes will accumulate in the intestines and be excreted in the stool. Orlistat (Xenical) also blocks the absorption of needed fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as beta-carotene, so daily vitamin supplements must be taken.

Orlistat (Xenical) Side Effects

Orlistat's most commonly reported side effects include bloating, diarrhea, and oily stools.

In one clinical trial involving Orlistat (Xenical), patients who took the drug and followed a weight-loss diet for one year lost an average of 19.3 pounds, while those who followed the diet and took a placebo lost an average of 12.8 pounds. Patients who took Orlistat (Xenical) also showed improvements in high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. The makers of Xenical claim that it reduces the amount of fat that can be absorbed into the bloodstream by up to thirty percent. This corresponds to about 600 calories a day, which should lead to a weight loss of about 1 pound a week.

Xenical Needs Low Fat Diet

Because excess fat goes straight through the body when Xenical is taken, dieters are advised to eat a low-fat diet otherwise they can get diarrhea.

Note: Always consult your doctor before taking any weight loss drugs.

What is Sibutramine?

Sibutramine (Meridia) is one of the new classes of appetite suppressants. It also works on the brain's appetite center - making it think the stomach is full - by raising levels of seratonin, an important neurotransmitter in the brain.

In clinical studies involving 6000 obese people, Meridia resulted in an average 5 percent to 10 percent weight loss over 1 year.

People who have a history of stroke, heart disease, congestive heart failure, or uncontrolled high blood pressure should not use Meridia.

Although this drug was not associated with heart-valve abnormalities, it can cause significant elevation in blood pressure in some people.

The drug manufacturer, Knoll Pharmaceutical Co., is urging physicians to carefully monitor the blood pressure of all patients taking Meridia.

Chitosan is derived from chitin, a polysaccharide found in the exoskeleton of shellfish such as shrimp, lobster, and or crabs.

Sellers claim that chitosan causes weight loss and a lowering of cholesterol by binding fats in the stomach and preventing them from being digested and absorbed.

Chitosan and Weight Loss

While there have been some promising studies that show chitosan to have a cholesterol-lowering effect in animals, there has been no such evidence in humans. And to date there is no research indicating that chitosan is effective for weight loss.

Anorex Side Effects

Some of the more common adverse reactions people experience from taking the ephedrine/caffeine stack are:

· nervousness
· dizziness
· tremors
· rapid heart rate
· headaches
· jitters
· palpitations
· insomnia, and
· increased blood pressure

Therefore before taking Anorex, you should learn more about the *ECA stack*.

While kola nut normally increases alertness and reduces fatigue, as with caffeine, if you take too much you could get jittery and have problems concentrating. As long as you stay with the recommended dose, these side effects are unlikely to occur. You should not experience any adverse effects from the tyrosine or kelp, either.

Some people with sensitive stomachs may have a problem with the cayenne and/or the large amount of aspirin in Anorex. Cayenne is a spice, and the reaction to spicy foods varies widely. Aspirin can also cause upset stomach and even irritate the stomach lining when taken on an ongoing basis. If you experience problems with either of these ingredients, try taking Anorex with meals. This will dilute the concentrations of these nutrients. If you still have problems, switch to another product that does not contain them.

Thermalean Diet Pill Side Effects

Thermalean, which claims: "By inducing a slight temperature increase, fat cells literally burn themselves up generating heat. Success was a very precise ratio of caffeine to ephedrine. Aspirin was added as a vasodilator (blood vessel dilator) and as a prostaglandin producer for its positive effects on metabolism."

The first problem with this statement is that fat cells do not burn up. The number of fat cells after age 30 remains the same as the body cannot destroy fat cell membranes, it can only try to empty the cells. This means there will always be that little layer around the middle that cannot be removed. This is considerably genetic, so blame your parents for this.

The second problem is the ingredient caffeine. Caffeine in the doses stated on the website (80 mg) is less than a regular cup of coffee (120 mg), but if taken several times a day as directed it can lead to specific side effects such as nervousness, sleeplessness, increased heart rate, and dehydration. Dehydration is definitely a disadvantage when working out as the volume of blood available to deliver oxygen and fuel to your muscles is less, and as a result, your exercise capacity is diminished.

The third problem with this statement is the ingredient ephedrine. Ephedrine is the active ingredient from the ephedra plant, which produces the beta-adrenergic agonist to increase heart rate, increase body temperature, and increase alertness. Ephedrine has been banned in some states because its structure closely resembles methamphetimine, which is a form of speed. Ephedrine is reasonably expected to produce cardiac abnormalities, and as a result should not be used if one suffers from high blood pressure, heart or thyroid problems. Side effects include sleeplessness, nervousness, and increased heart rate.

Another ingredient of Thermalean is chromium, a trace essential element that may be involved in glucose regulation. The rationale for this addition is that it enhances insulin’s effect of glucose uptake and preservation, therefore lowering blood glucose to focus fuel burning on fat. At present, there is no evidence of this from animal studies and no good evidence that chromium enhances performance.

I visited a diet club forum, which reviewed consumer reactions to Thermalean, and popular reactions to the product were as follows. One consumer complained of a mild annoying headache, which wouldn't go away until the pills weren't taken anymore. Another complained of dry mouth, nausea, and numb hands.

Another problem concerning Thermalean and other stimulatory supplements is that by delaying fatigue and producing euphoric effects, stimulants carry the risk that an athlete will be pushed beyond safe physiological limits and could suffer serious consequences and ignore musculoskeletal injuries.

A website advertising Thermalean posted the following message at the bottom in fine print: "Do not take this product if you are allergic to stimulants, i.e. caffeine, ephedrine, aspirin, or if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, are pregnant or nursing a baby, or have stomach or duodenal ulcers. Discontinue us if you experience over excitement, insomnia, rapid heart beat, confusion, or fever."

Minimizing the Health Risks of Weight Loss Diet Pills

If you want to take weight loss or diet pills but you want to reduce the health risks, follow these elementary precautions.

Always consult your doctor before taking weight loss pills. Ask about health risks.
Follow instructions, do not overdose.
The health risks of overdosing on weight loss pills can be severe.
While taking the pills, maintain contact with your doctor. Describe any side-effects.
Unless advised by your doctor, do not take any weight loss pills for longer than a few weeks. The health risks of weight loss pills increase with length of use.
When buying over-the-counter weight loss medications, check with your pharmacist that the pills do not clash with other medications. Since certain diet pills contain similar active ingredients to (e.g. decongestants, cough medicine), combining certain medications with weight loss pills carries health risks of accidental overdosing.
