MY BATTLE WITH PARKINSON’S
I’m writing this testimony for the benefit of all those wonderful people who suffer from early symptoms and signs of Parkinson Disease. This is the story of my bout with the disease and my partial victory. It is my hope that I can be of help to someone. Just knowing there are people who are and have found some measure of relief from the Parkinson disease may be all the spark that is needed to try one more time and succeed. I also know that just because Vitacel causes a parkinsons remission for one person, does not mean that it will work for another But how do we know unless we try? I encourage you, “DON’T GIVE UP, KEEP TRYING.”
The date was early spring 1982. My occupation? Clothing retailer I had been arm wrestling with my sons. A few weeks later, my right arm went totally limp, and required several minutes of massage to get some feeling back into it. From that point on, I had a great deal of difficulty writing. I just passed this off as a pinched nerve resulting from the arm wrestling.
Over the next few months, the early symptoms and signs of my Parkinson disease worsened. My whole body seemed to be stiffening up. My wife was constantly reminding me to pick up my feet. I just seemed to stumble over the least little things. I enjoyed golf but I was finding it most difficult to swing a club, and I eventually had to give up the sport. At this time, I was 53 years of age and had been active all my life. I would golf, canoe and hike during the summer. In the winter, I would cross country ski. I found myself spending more time on our rebounder each morning trying to counter my stiffness, but to no avail.
By July, I was walking with a slight stoop. It was difficult to carry on a conversation because my speech was becoming slurred and I would forget what the conversation was about. It became apparent even to me that there was something more serious than a pinched nerve. It took my wife, Jean, until the end of July to persuade me to see a doctor. It took the doctor about 15 minutes to diagnose the early symptoms and signs as Parkinson’s Disease. I was told the medical profession knew very little about the disease and there was no known Parkinsons disease cure. I was sent home with the latest parkinsons drug called Sinemet and was told to take one a day. With the first Sinemet pill I took, the side efects were so bad, the Sinemet put me on my back for 2 1/2 hours, at which time I was convinced that the so called medicine cure was worse that the disease. I was then told by my doctor to start off with a 1/4 or a 1/2 pill at a time until my system became accustomed to the drug.
My parkinsons disease symptoms continued to worsen. By mid-September, my memory had gone to the point that if a customer would ask me for a white shin, I would take three or four steps and forget what he had asked me for It was almost impossible to write out an invoice or sign my name. I was then referred to a specialist who did little more that confirm my family doctor’s diagnosis. I was told that as my condition worsened to increase the Sinemet medication to a maximum of 8 per day and from that point on, I would be on a down-hill run. By January of 1983, I was using the maximum of 8 Sinemet pills per day and was unable to maintain my level of health. Because of my worsening condition, mainly memory, speech and my inability to even write out a simple invoice, the decision was made to close our retail store.
It was in this same time period that a friend suggested that I contact a herbalist. I knew very little about herbalists and was quite negative to the suggestion but at this point what did I have to loose? The herbalist also told me there was no cure for Parkinson’s Disease, but if I was willing to change my life style there was a chance that I might bring it under control. I had nothing to lose.
My new way of life was to consist of:
- A new nutritional diet (NO JUNK FOODS);
- Several herbs as a supplement to the diet;
- An exercise program; and
- My nutritionist suggested that I take Vitacel GH7 along with the herbs. This product was to help the body help itself and make everything work that much better. The Vitacel GH7 antiaging supplement, I was told, would help the body assimilate more of the vitamins and minerals from the food that we eat, and act as a catalyst in carrying vitamins and minerals directly into the cell membrane. I must point out that I was told by both my nutritionist and my herbalist that it would take time and that I must be patient and there was a chance I would get very little relief from Parkinsons disease and perhaps none at all. But with good nutrition, exercise and GH7, my body was bound to react in a positive way.
I must admit that after 2 months, I could see absolutely no improvement. I contacted my nutritionist and informed her I was going to quit. She shook her finger at me and said, “Bill Meyer, your body didn’t get in this condition overnight and dont you expect it to be cured from the Parkinsons disease overnight.” Well, I still had one more month’s supply of Vitacel GH-7 left, so I picked up some more herbs and gave it a try for one more month.
At the very end of the third month, I had one slight, positive sign and reaction. I had a very little vertical movement with my right hand, and to give it some kind of exercise, I would use both hands to brush my teeth. While performing this every day task, I let go with my left hand and to my great surprise (be it ever so slight) my right hand continued to move. Well, this was all it took to spur me on for another 3 months. At the end of this period, I noticed an improvement in my speech and handwriting. I didn’t stoop quite as much. The improvements were not extensive, but they were there. So off I went for another 3 months. At the end of the 9 month period, things were looking so well, I could carry on a conversation without forgetting what I was talking about halfway through a sentence. I wasn’t as stiff and my walk had a bounce one again. Friends would stop and comment on how well I looked.
For the entire 9 month period, I remained taking the 8 Sinemet medicine pills, every day. The hour of truth was at hand, I decided to start reducing the Sinemet medication. As not to rock the boat, I dropped a pill a month until I was at zero. But this was not to last for long. Over a period of a few weeks, the parkinsons disease symptoms started to very slowly reappear so I decided to reinstate Sinemet into my program. I now take one Sinemet and on a very long day 1 and 1/2. But that’s a far cry from the eight a day.
Over the next two years, I have been able to cut back on a number of the herbs I was taking, but it should be noted that I take four Vitacel GH7 antiaging supplements a day, two an hour before breakfast and two an hour before our evening meal, as directed. The only side effect I have ever noticed, or should I say side benefit was, “No more migraine headaches.” Before I got on this program, I used to get several migraines a month.
1984 and especially 1985 were banner years for me. I was able to golf, hike, ski and once again, my canoe heads for the white water. Few people realize that I have the disease. Oh yes, I’ll probably be on herbs and GH7 and now Vitacel 9, for the rest of my life, but I’m grateful to have a quality life to look forward to.
At this point in time, I would like to express my love and gratitude to the two most prominent persons responsible for my success. My nutritionist who recommended the Vitacel GH7 and our dear friend Margaret Kopi, for shaking her finger, and all her encouragements.
To my dear wife, Jean, for those great nutritional meals. For the countless times she had to remind me, “Pick up your feet, straighten up, have you taken your pills? Bill, you shouldn’t eat that,” and the list goes on.
To the makers of Vitacel. Without this fine product, my Parkinsons disease health success, would have been uncertain.

WHAT IS PARKINSON'S DISEASE?
Parkinsons disease is a progressive neurological disorder that results from degeneration of neurons in a region of the brain that controls movement. This degeneration creates a shortage of the brain signaling chemical (neurotransmitter) known as dopamine, causing the movement impairments that characterize the disease. Parkinson's disease was first formally described in "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy," published in 1817 by a London physician named James Parkinson, but it has probably existed for many thousands of years. Its symptoms and potential therapies were mentioned in the Ayurveda, the system of medicine practiced in India as early as 5000 BC, and in the first Chinese medical text, Nei Jing, which appeared 2500 years ago.
WHAT ARE THE EARLY SYMPTOMS OF PARKINSON DISEASE?
Often, the first symptom of Parkinson's disease is tremor (trembling or shaking) of a limb, especially when the body is at rest. The tremor often begins on one side of the body, frequently in one hand. Other common symptoms include slow movement (bradykinesia), an inability to move (akinesia), rigid limbs, a shuffling gait, and a stooped posture. People with Parkinsons disease often show reduced facial expressions and speak in a soft voice. Occasionally, the disease also causes depression, personality changes, dementia, sleep disturbances, speech impairments, or sexual difficulties. The severity of Parkinson's symptoms tends to worsen over time.
HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED?
In the United States, at least 500,000 people are believed to suffer from Parkinson's disease, and about 50,000 new cases are reported annually. These figures are expected to increase as the average age of the population increases. The disorder appears to be slightly more common in men than women. The average age of onset is about 60. Both prevalence and incidence increase with advancing age; the rates are very low in people under 40 and rise among people in their 70s and 80s. Parkinsons disease is found all over the world. The rates vary from country to country, but it is not clear whether this reflects true ethnic and/or geographic differences or discrepancies in data collection.
WHAT CAUSES PARKINSON'S DISEASE?
Although there are many theories about the cause of Parkinsons disease, none has ever been proved. Researchers have reported families with apparently inherited Parkinson's for more than a century. However, until recently, the prevailing theory held that one or more environmental factors caused the disease. Severe Parkinson's-like symptoms have been described in people who took an illegal drug contaminated with the chemical MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) and in people who contracted a particularly severe form of influenza during an epidemic in the early 1900s. Recent studies of twins and families with Parkinson's have suggested that some people have an inherited susceptibility to the disease that may be influenced by environmental factors. The strong familial inheritance of the chromosome 4 gene is the first evidence that a gene alteration alone may lead to Parkinson's disease in some people.
HOW IS PARKINSON'S DISEASE DIAGNOSED?
Parkinsons disease is usually diagnosed by a neurologist who can evaluate symptoms and their severity. There is no test that can clearly identify the disease. Sometimes people with suspected Parkinson's disease are given anti-Parkinson's drugs to see if they respond. Other tests, such as brain scans, can help doctors decide if a patient has true Parkinson's disease or some other disorder that resembles it. Microscopic brain structures called Lewy bodies, which can be seen only during an autopsy, are regarded as a hallmark of classical Parkinson's. Autopsies have uncovered Lewy bodies in a surprising number of older persons without diagnosed Parkinson's -- 8% of people over 50, almost 13% of people over 70, and almost 16% of those over 80, according to one study. As a result, some experts believe Parkinson's disease is something of an "iceberg; phenomenon," lurking undetected in as many as 20 people for each known Parkinson's patient. A few researchers contend that almost everyone would develop Parkinson's eventually if they lived long enough.
WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?
There is no cure for Parkinsons disease. Many patients are only mildly affected and need no treatment for several years after the initial diagnosis. When symptoms grow severe, doctors usually prescribe levodopa (L-dopa), which helps replace the brain's dopamine. Sometimes doctors prescribe other drugs that affect dopamine levels in the brain. In patients who are very severely affected, a kind of brain surgery known as pallidotomy has reportedly been effective in reducing symptoms. Another kind of brain surgery, in which healthy dopamine-producing tissue is transplanted into the brain, is also being tested. Finally, researchers are trying to identify substances that will prevent dopamine-producing brain cells from dying.
