DNA damage from micronutrient deficiencies is likely to be a major cause of cancer.

A deficiency of any of the micronutrients: folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron or zinc, mimics radiation in damaging DNA by causing single- and double-strand breaks, oxidative lesions or both. For example, the percentage of the US population that has a low intake (less than 50% of the RDA) for each of these eight micronutrients ranges from 2 to 20%. A level of folate deficiency causing chromosome breaks was present in approximately 10% of the US population, and in a much higher percentage of the poor. Folate deficiency causes extensive incorporation of uracil into human DNA (4 million/cell), leading to chromosomal breaks. This mechanism is the likely cause of the increased colon cancer risk associated with low folate intake. Some evidence, and mechanistic considerations, suggest that vitamin B12 (14% US elderly) and B6 (10% of US) deficiencies also cause high uracil and chromosome breaks. Micronutrient deficiency may explain, in good part, why the quarter of the population that eats the fewest fruits and vegetables (five portions a day is advised) has about double the cancer rate for most types of cancer when compared to the quarter with the highest intake. For example, 80% of American children and adolescents and 68% of adults do not eat five portions a day. Common micronutrient deficiencies are likely to damage DNA by the same mechanism as radiation and many chemicals, appear to be orders of magnitude more important, and should be compared for perspective. Remedying micronutrient deficiencies should lead to a major improvement in health and an increase in longevity at low cost.

Data from the Nurses' Health and Health Professionals Follow-up studies (88,000 women and 47,000 men, respectively) were analyzed to examine the effect of calcium dietary supplements intake on risk of colon cancer. At a 16 and 10-year follow-up for the two studies, 626 women and 399 men had developed colon malignancies. Those who consumed 700-800mg calcium daily, from diet or supplements, had a 40-50% lower risk of developing colon cancer than those with intakes under 500 mg/day.

Magnesium is associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease, report researchers, urging further study to find if increased intake of the mineral can protect against the disease.

Magnesium deficiency is believed to have complex effects on cardiovascular health but until now an association between the chemical and the risk of heart disease had not been clearly identified.

The study recorded magnesium intake for more than 7,000 men aged 45 to 68 years, participating in the Honolulu Heart Program. In 30 years of follow-up, the researchers identified 1,431 incident cases of heart disease.

Results from the first 15 years of the study showed that heart disease occurred in seven out of 1000 people from the lowest daily intake quartile (50.3mg-186 mg), compared to only 4 in 1000 of those with the highest intake (340 mg to 1183mg).

When adjustments were made for age and other nutrients (singly or combined), heart disease increased from 1.7- to 2.1-fold in the lowest versus highest quintiles of magnesium intake, added the researchers from University of Virginia School of Medicine and colleagues in Hawaii.

Writing in the 15 September issue of the American Medicine Journal of Cardiology, the researchers said that associations between dietary magnesium and coronary events occurring after 15 years of follow-up were modest.

Further studies could demonstrate a role for magnesium supplementation.

Silibinin: The natural Herbal medicine Extract supplement that Protects the Liver

MILK THISTLE Since ancient times, the herb we call “milk thistle” has been used to treat liver and gall bladder disease, snake bites and menstrual problems. Scientifically known as Silybum marianum, milk thistle is a member of the same plant family as the artichoke and daisy. Milk thistle’s medicinal properties derive from an extract taken from its seeds. The “active ingredient” in milk thistle extract is silymarin.1 Silymarin is not just a single substance: it’s a mixture of several flavonoids, including silydianin, silychristin and silibinin. Silibinin is the most biologically active member of the group, and is used alone in scientific studies.

Research suggests that silibinin detoxifies and protects the liver, guards against free radical damage, reduces inflammation and otherwise promotes good health.

Silibinin and the liver

Silibinin is perhaps best known as a guardian of the liver, protecting it against toxins and spurring the growth of new tissue to replace damaged areas. Protection from toxins is crucial, for biological poisons are continually brought to the liver for disposal. Weighing some four pounds and sitting in the right side of the upper abdomen, the liver has hundreds of other duties, including converting food particles into fats, carbohydrates and proteins and participating in the regulation and storage of glucose.

The liver is awash in blood, with two quarts rushing through it every minute. This blood contains a host of noxious substances, including bacteria, antigen-allergy complexes, free radicals, drug metabolites and pesticides. The liver filters some harmful substances right out of the blood, and attacks others with enzymes that break them apart or neutralize them.

Detoxifying harmful substances is a dangerous task, for if they are not quickly deactivated and properly routed, the liver itself could become damaged. Silibinin helps prevent this from happening in several ways:

Protects against harmful substances entering the liver

Silibinin guards against the liver damage caused by ethanol, carbon tetrachloride and poisonous mushrooms,2 as well as chemotherapy drugs and other harmful substances. One of the ways silibinin protects the liver is by spurring production of a substance called glutathione, which detoxifies liver cells. Animal studies show that silibinin can increase glutathione levels by up to 35% in the liver, stomach and intestines.3 In addition, the silychristin and silydianin in silymarin alter the outer membranes of liver cells, making it harder for toxins to enter the cells.

Maintains bile flow

Cholestasis is an interruption or blockage of the flow of bile from the liver to the small intestines. Bile helps carry deactivated toxins out of the body via the feces. Bile blockages can lead to jaundice, with intense itching, fatty and pale stools, and other symptoms. Inflammatory substances called leukotrienes play a role in bringing on cholestasis, and silibinin helps guard against this by inhibiting their production.

Guards against damage caused by excessive alcohol and fibrosis

The liver contains fat-storing cells which, under certain conditions (such as alcoholism), can become inflamed, growing larger and turning into myofibroblasts. These cells increase the deposition of collagen and promote the replacement of normal liver tissue with fibrous connective tissue, causing the liver to malfunction. Silibinin interferes with the conversion of these fat cells into myofibroblasts and the laying down of harmful fibrous tissue.

Reduces iron-induced damage

Excess iron in the body can increase free radical damage, especially in the liver. Acting as an antioxidant, silibinin helps protect against iron-induced damage to the liver tissue. It may also help “bind up” free iron in the blood, making it safe to excrete.

Regenerates liver tissue

Silibinin encourages protein synthesis in liver cells, spurring the growth of new liver cells and allowing damaged liver tissue to regenerate.

Weakening of the liver, with a resulting accumulation of poisons there and in the rest of the body, can lead to problems with the immune system and many different ailments. By helping to keep the liver strong and efficient, silibinin helps to keep the entire body healthy.

Silibinin reduces oxidation and quenches free radicals

Silibinin fights the oxidation and free radical damage that can weaken and destroy cells throughout the body, eventually damaging tissues and organs. The silibinin in silymarin is a powerful free radical scavenger.8 It also stimulates the activity of other antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione.

Silibinin quells inflammation

Various cells in the body produce nitric oxide and leukotrienes, two inflammatory substances that can cause severe damage to the liver and other tissues. Nitric oxide can also spur the creation of free radicals, which cause additional damage. Silibinin inhibits the formation of both nitric oxide and leukotrienes.12 In high concentrations, silibinin can reduce leukotriene levels by some 70%, compared to control values. Through its anti-inflammatory properties, silibinin can help prevent tissue damage in the liver, kidneys and elsewhere in the body, as well as slow the formation of gallstones.

Silibinin guards against type II diabetes

Although type II diabetes normally makes us think of the pancreas and its insulin-producing cells, the liver also plays an important role in regulating blood sugar. It converts glucose to glycogen for storage, and breaks down glycogen stores to make glucose available on demand. If the liver is significantly damaged by alcohol, excessive inflammation or any number of toxins, it will not be able to assist in regulating blood sugar, possibly resulting in type II diabetes or metabolic syndrome.

Several years ago, 60 very ill patients suffering from type II diabetes and alcohol-induced liver damage were enrolled in a study. Half were given 600 mg of silymarin every day for 12 months, the other half a placebo.13 The results were impressive: silymarin drove down fasting blood glucose levels, as well as the amount of blood sugar in the urine. But it didn’t push the blood glucose level down far enough to cause hypoglycemia (abnormally low blood sugar), suggesting that silymarin is “smart,” stabilizing blood sugar at safe levels. Furthermore, a German cell-culture study suggests that silibinin slows or prevents the build up of fibronectin – a significant cause of organ damage – in the kidney cells of diabetics.

Three-way fight against cancer

Early findings suggest that silibinin may be useful in the battle against cancer in three different ways:

First, it may fight cancer directly. One laboratory study15 showed that silibinin could stop the further development of prostate cancer cells. Silibinin didn’t kill the cancer cells; it caused them to behave like normal prostate cells. This led to a large decrease in the secretion of PSA, an important marker of prostate cancer. Other researchers found that silibinin arrested the growth of drug-resistant and drug-sensitive breast and ovarian cancer cells.

Second, silibinin may strengthen the effects of cancer drugs. In one study, silibinin worked synergistically with the chemotherapy agents cisplatin and doxorubicin.

Finally, silibinin can help protect the kidneys from the harmful effects of cisplatin and perhaps similar anti-cancer drugs.

Silibinin may lower cholesterol

Back in 1977, laboratory research conducted by German scientists showed that silibinin could inhibit the production of cholesterol.18 Newer studies have produced similar results, with one showing that taking silibinin lowers the amount of cholesterol in the liver and increases the amount of “good” HDL cholesterol. Silibinin also slows the oxidation, or transformation, of “bad” LDL cholesterol into an even more dangerous form.

MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane), also known as dimethyl sulfone, is a naturally occurring sulfur compound, found in human diets and those of virtually all other vertebrates. In its purified form, it is an odorless, slightly bitter tasting, water soluble, white, crystalline powder containing 34% elemental sulfur. Its chemical formula is (CH3)2SO2.

Some atmospheric chemists have suggested that MSM and its related compounds, DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide), and DMS (dimethylsulfide) provide the source for 85% of sulfur compounds in all living organisms. These naturally occurring compounds begin in the ocean where phytoplankton convert inorganic sulfur present in the sea water to terniary dimethyl sulfonium salts. These salts are later broken down, by enzymatic action, into the volatile compound called dimethylsulfide (DMS), which escapes the ocean as a gas, rises into the upper atmosphere to be oxidized there in the presence of ozone and ultraviolet light to its chemical cousins, DMSO and MSM. Unlike DMS, both DMSO and MSM are water soluble and are returned to the earth in rain. Plants rapidly absorb the two compounds concentrating them up to a hundred-fold. Animals eat the plants and the distribution of these sulfur compounds is then complete. MSM has been found in the blood and adrenal glands of cows. Cows' milk contains between two and six parts per million MSM.

MSM occurs naturally in the human body as a result of the food we eat. It is a normal component of fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat. It has also been found in tea, coffee and chocolate. It has been detected in normal human urine. The amount of MSM present in the circulatory system of an adult human male is about 0.2 parts per million. Normal adult humans excrete from four to eleven milligrams of MSM per day in their urine. In vertebrates, the concentration of MSM decreases with age. Some research suggests that there is a minimum concentration of MSM that must be maintained in the body to preserve normal function and structure.

MSM is rated as one of the least toxic substances in biology. It is so inert and nontoxic that aqueous solutions can even be used as a blood dilutent. In mice, no clinical changes were observed at oral doses of 2000 mg per kilogram of body weight. The lethal dose (LD50) of MSM for mice is over 20 grams per kilogram of body weight. Hundreds of patients have been treated at the Oregon Health Sciences University with oral MSM at levels above two grams daily for many years without serious toxicity.

Scientists don't yet know all the functions of MSM in the human body, but at the Oregon Health Sciences University the following conditions have responded well to supplemental MSM:

  • Allergy Response to pollens and foods is sharply curtailed. Medication may be reduced or eliminated.
  • Control of hyperacidity. Patients who have used antacids and histamine-receptor antagonists to control hyperacidity can employ MSM with excellent results.
  • Relief from constipation. Patients with chronic constipation have had prompt and continuing relief with a daily supplement of MSM.

Research done at Ohio State University College of Medicine showed that oral MSM can protect rats against the onset of breast cancer. Rats bred to be susceptible to breast cancer when given certain carcinogenic compounds were fed a diet containing added MSM for eight days. Following this period the rats were given 15 mg doses of 7, 12-dimethylbenzanthracene by oral gastric incubation. The health of the rats was monitored for nearly one year and compared to a similar group of carcinogen-dosed rats that had not received the MSM diet. Although there was no statistical difference in the number of tumors developing in the two groups, the MSM diet rats developed their first tumors 100 days later than the non-MSM diet rats, and these tumors became cancerous about 130 days later than those in the control group.

The same researchers from the Ohio State University College of Medicine also studied the protection that dietary MSM provided rats injected with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine, a compound that induces colon cancer. One group of rats received MSM as a 1% solution in their drinking water during the experiment. The control group received only tap water. One week after the start of the dietary regimen, all rats were injected with the carcinogen. At two-month intervals the rats were examined under anesthesia for tumors. Rats without any appearance of tumors were returned to the experiment. Again, the number of bowel tumors occurring in the rats was statistically the same for treated and untreated rats over the entire nine-month experiment. However, the time of appearance of the first bowel tumors was considerably longer in the MSM treated rats. The conclusion of the researchers was that MSM significantly lengthens the time of tumor onset compared to controls and MSM should be further investigated as a preventive for colon cancer.

Researchers at Oregon Health Sciences University studied a strain of mice that were prone to spontaneous development of joint lesions similar to those in rheumatoid arthritis. They found that animals fed a diet that included a 3% solution of MSM, in drinking water from the age of two months until the age of five months, suffered no degeneration of articular cartilage. In the control group of mice receiving only tap water, 50% of the animals were found to have focal degeneration of articular cartilage.

Finally, recent human research at the UCLA School of Medicine found an 82% reduction in pain after six weeks of oral MSM use in a double blind study on degenerative arthritis. The study spanned four months and involved sixteen patients: ten patients on MSM and six on placebo. After only six weeks, those patients using the MSM experienced better than 80% control of their pain, while those on the placebo experienced on average an 18% improvement at six weeks.

What does it do? Chondroitin sulfate consists of repeating chains of molecules called mucopolysaccharides. Chondroitin sulfate is a major constituent of cartilage, providing structure, holding water and nutrients, and allowing other molecules to move through cartilage-an important property, as there is no blood supply to cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate also appears to help restore joint function in people with osteoarthritis, a finding confirmed in double blind research.

Chondroitin and similar compounds are present in the lining of blood vessels and the urinary bladder. They help prevent abnormal movement of blood, urine, or components across the barrier of the vessel or bladder wall. Part of chondroitin's role in blood vessels is to prevent excessive blood clotting remains unclear. However, whether supplements of chondroitin they are able to favorably affect blood clotting. In addition, chondroitin sulfate may lower blood cholesterol levels. Older preliminary research showed that chondroitin sulfate may prevent atherosclerosis in animals and humans and may also prevent heart attacks in people who already have atherosclerosis.

Perhaps as a result, researchers found that when chondroitin sulfate was sprayed onto nasal passages in a small group of snorers, the amount of time people spent snoring was reduced about one third in a double blind trial. No further studies have investigated the effects of oral chondroitin sulfate on snoring.

Chondroitin sulfate is classified as a type of glycosaminoglycan; it is rich in sulfur and is related to glucosamine. Glycosaminoglycans affect how the body processes oxalate-a substance linked to kidney stones. In one study of forty people with a history of kidney stones, 30 mg twice a day of mixed glycosaminoglycans reduced urinary oxalate excretion in fifteen days-a change that could drop the risk of stone formation. However, while experts believe that glycosaminoglycans effectively prevent formation of kidney stones in test tube studies, effects in humans have been inconsistent.

Where is it found? The only significant food source of chondroitin sulfate is animal cartilage.
